Objective:
To advance foundational drawing skills by incorporating more complex techniques, developing a stronger sense of depth and form, and using a variety of drawing media to create dynamic and expressive compositions.
Criteria for Earning the Badge:
Advanced Line and Shape Work:
- Use a combination of controlled and expressive lines to create more dynamic compositions.
- Demonstrate an understanding of complex shapes and forms through observational drawing, such as drawing still-life arrangements.
Value and Shading Techniques:
- Apply a range of values (light to dark) to create a sense of depth and three-dimensionality.
- Utilize advanced shading techniques, including stippling, gradation, and the use of reflected light.
Perspective Drawing:
- Show basic one-point and two-point perspective techniques to convey depth in architectural or landscape drawings.
- Accurately represent the relationship between objects in space, emphasizing foreground, middle ground, and background.
Texture Representation:
- Render different textures, such as wood, metal, or fabric, using a variety of mark-making techniques.
- Demonstrate the ability to make a surface appear tactile and realistic.
Contour and Gesture Drawing:
- Complete both contour and gesture drawings to capture the essence and movement of a subject.
- Use quick, fluid lines to express motion and energy in gesture sketches.
Proportion and Anatomy:
- Apply knowledge of human and/or animal anatomy to achieve more accurate proportions in figure drawing.
- Show evidence of understanding the structure and movement of the body in posed drawings.
Use of Mixed Media:
- Experiment with combining different drawing materials (e.g., pencil with ink, charcoal with pastel) to add depth and interest to artwork.
- Demonstrate proper techniques for layering and blending media.
Composition and Storytelling:
- Create compositions that tell a story or convey a theme, using elements like focal points and balance.
- Employ framing and cropping to enhance the visual impact of the drawing.
Submission Requirements:
- Submit five to seven drawings that illustrate the criteria above, with at least one piece showing the use of perspective and one piece using mixed media.
- Include a written reflection (200-250 words) discussing how your drawing skills have developed from Level 1 to Level 2 and how you incorporated new techniques.
Assessment Rubric:
- Exemplary (5 points): Demonstrates advanced drawing techniques with a strong sense of depth, form, and texture, and shows creative use of mixed media.
- Proficient (4 points): Applies drawing skills effectively, with minor inconsistencies, and demonstrates thoughtful composition and use of materials.
- Satisfactory (3 points): Adequate representation of depth and form, but with noticeable areas for improvement in execution or technique.
- Developing (2 points): Basic understanding of advanced drawing concepts, but struggles with consistency and technique.
- Beginning (1 point): Limited development in advanced skills, requiring significant practice and refinement.
