Digital Badge in Basic Drawing Skills Level 1: Criteria Guide

Objective:

To demonstrate foundational drawing skills using various techniques and media, focusing on observation, control, and basic design principles.

Criteria for Earning the Badge:

  1. Line and Shape Mastery:

    • Demonstrate the ability to create different types of lines (straight, curved, broken) with consistent pressure and control.
    • Accurately represent basic geometric shapes (circle, square, triangle) and organic shapes using observational drawing techniques.
  2. Shading and Light:

    • Show the ability to apply simple shading techniques, such as hatching, cross-hatching, and blending, to convey light and shadow.
    • Illustrate a basic understanding of light direction and how it affects the appearance of shapes and forms.
  3. Proportion and Scale:

    • Use guides or reference points to draw objects in the correct proportion relative to each other.
    • Display awareness of the difference between large and small scale in drawing compositions.
  4. Contour Drawing:

    • Complete contour line drawings to show the outline and essential details of a subject.
    • Exhibit the ability to draw continuous lines without lifting the pencil from the paper.
  5. Use of Drawing Media:

    • Demonstrate familiarity with at least two drawing media, such as pencil, charcoal, or ink.
    • Show proper handling techniques, including maintaining pencil pressure and holding the drawing tool for maximum control.
  6. Composition and Framing:

    • Arrange elements within a drawing to create a simple but balanced composition.
    • Use a frame or viewfinder to select interesting viewpoints and perspectives.
  7. Submission Requirements:

    • Submit three to five drawings that illustrate the criteria above, each labeled with the technique used (e.g., “Contour Drawing – Pencil”).
    • Include a brief reflection (150-200 words) on what you learned through the drawing exercises and how you improved.

Assessment Rubric:

  • Exemplary (5 points): Consistently demonstrates excellent control of drawing techniques, with clear and precise representations of light, shadow, and proportion.
  • Proficient (4 points): Shows good understanding and application of basic drawing skills with some room for improvement in control or technique.
  • Satisfactory (3 points): Adequate execution of drawing tasks, with occasional inconsistencies in technique or representation.
  • Developing (2 points): Needs more practice to achieve control and accurate representation of drawing skills.
  • Beginning (1 point): Limited understanding and application of basic drawing principles, requiring significant improvement.
