Reimagine the Mona Lisa

Activity: Reimagine the Mona Lisa

Objective:
Encourage creativity by letting participants reinterpret the face of the Mona Lisa, adding their own twist to this iconic artwork.

Materials Needed:

  • Printed copies of the Mona Lisa with the blank face (like the one provided)
  • Colored pencils, markers, crayons
  • Glue, scissors, and collage materials (magazines, patterned paper, stickers)
  • Optional: Paint, glitter, or textured materials for a mixed-media effect

Instructions:

  1. Introduce the Artwork: Begin by showing the original Mona Lisa and discussing its significance. Talk about why it’s such an iconic painting and ask participants to imagine who she might be or what she could look like in a different style.

  2. Design the Face: Give each participant a printed copy of the Mona Lisa with the blank face. Explain that they can add their own interpretation of the face. They could draw a new face, make her look modern, or even add funny or unexpected elements!

  3. Add Personality with Accessories: Encourage them to add accessories to the Mona Lisa, like sunglasses, a hat, jewelry, or even a mustache, to give her a unique character. Let them use stickers or magazine cut-outs for these details.

  4. Create a Background Story (Optional): Ask each participant to come up with a short story about who their Mona Lisa is. What’s her personality? Where is she from? Why is she smiling (or not)?

  5. Display and Discuss: Set up a mini-gallery where everyone can display their finished artwork. Have participants share their stories and interpretations, creating a collaborative storytelling experience around the Mona Lisa.

  6. Reflect: Wrap up by discussing how art can be interpreted in many ways and how creativity allows us to connect with historical works in a personal way.

Variations:

  • Mixed Media Collage: Use a variety of textures and materials to create a more tactile version of the Mona Lisa.
  • Digital Art: If you have tablets or computers, allow participants to design her face digitally using drawing software.

This activity will foster creativity, allow for personal expression, and make the Mona Lisa fun and approachable!
