Activity: Mix-and-Match Cube-Bot
Objective:
Create a robot with interchangeable parts by rotating three cubes, each featuring four different designs for the head, body, and legs/wheels.
Materials Needed:
- Three black card cubes per child (for head, body, and legs/wheels)
- Markers, stickers, and metallic pens
- Small cut-out robot details (eyes, buttons, gears, etc.)
- Glue and tape
- Optional: Holographic or metallic tape for “seams” on each cube
Instructions:
Prepare Each Cube Face: Explain to the children that each side of the cube represents a different part of the robot. They’ll be designing four faces on each cube:
- Head Cube: Each face has a unique robot head (one might have big round eyes, another might have antennas, one could have a visor, etc.).
- Body Cube: Each face shows a different robot torso (with buttons, gears, screens, or tools).
- Legs/Wheels Cube: Each face represents a different set of legs or wheels (one might have treads, another springs, another wheels, etc.).
Decorate the Faces: Kids can use markers, pens, and stickers to bring each face to life. Encourage them to make each side different so that the combinations will look unique when the cubes are rotated.
Assemble and Stack the Cubes: Once decorated, the cubes are stacked with the head on top, the body in the middle, and the legs/wheels at the bottom.
Rotate and Create: Encourage children to rotate each cube to create a new robot each time. This allows for 64 unique robot combinations (4 heads x 4 bodies x 4 legs) with just three cubes!
Robot Story: Once they’ve found a favorite combination, ask the children to name their robot and think about its personality, job, or powers based on its current “look.”
Display and Interactive Play: Set up a station where children can showcase their robots and let others play with the cubes to create new combinations.
Optional: Magnetic or Velcro Feature for Stability If you want the cubes to stay aligned but still rotate, you could add small Velcro tabs or mini magnets on each cube's edges to hold them lightly in place while allowing rotation.
This rotating cube design encourages creativity and exploration as children experiment with endless robot combinations, making it a fun and dynamic art project!
